Citizen Schools
Citizen Schools is an after-school partnership program with Revere, which began programming at the school in August 2006. The national non-profit organization was founded in Boston in 1995, and is located in many schools throughout the country.
At the Revere campus, students who enroll in Citizen Schools receive help with their homework four days a week, and are taught study skills critical to their success in middle school. Furthermore, each student enrolls in four hands-on, skill-based apprenticeship classes per year, which are taught by community volunteers. Past apprenticeships have included Cooking, Solar Car Engineering, Power Point, Sign Language, Music, and more! Students also attend educational field trips which help them to think about their futures. Past field trips have included the Houston Museum of Natural Science, Westside High School, the University of Houston, the IKEA store, and Bear Creek Park.
WHO: The program is targeted toward students who want to improve their grades and learn new skills in an interactive, hands-on setting.
WHEN: We expect students to attend every day, Monday through Thursday, from 3:55pm-6:30pm for an entire academic year.
WHERE: The program is held at Paul Revere, with the exception of field trips out into the community.
WHY: Because it is never too early for students to set goals for the future, and to acquire the skills which will allow them to get there! At Citizen Schools, students are in a safe place, with caring adults, using their time productively to learn new things and to improve their grades in school.
